Smiling, Caring and Learning Together on a Journey with God

A week of planting and visitors

We have had a super week in Cherry Class and we look forward to another fun packed week next week.

This week in Cherry Class we have been following the children's interests in planting and flowers. We have been learning about different types of plants, naming parts of plants and learning about what plants need in order to grow. We have begun to clear some of our outdoor space for some planting next week and can't wait to plant some of our own seeds. We have been using scientific observations to look closely at different kinds of seeds and plants. We have made predictions about what seeds will grow into. Do we think big seeds always make big plants and little seeds always make little plants?

We were very excited to have both the fire service and a police officer visit us this week. We found out all about fire safety and the children got to see the fire engine. They were amazed to see that the hose could spray the water all the way to the bottom of the playground. The police officer taught us all about what she does as a job and how she protects people. We got to see the police car with the siren and flashing lights, try on uniform and do our own finger prints! This was such an exciting way to bring to a close our learning about 'people who help us'.

In phonics we have been learning the tricky words: one, there, when, what. Can you spot them in your reading books at home? The children have been reading and writing more challenging words with phase 4 blends in them. We have also been practising writing sentences too - with finger spaces, capital letters and punctuation.

The children have been enjoying our new role play area, a garden centre shop! They have been acting in role as a shop keeper and customer. Some children have drawn and labelled their own plants and others have written lists of things needed for our garden centre.

In Maths this week we have learnt about doubles. We have been finding doubles with concrete resources as well as doubling spots on a ladybird.

In PE the children have been learning about mirroring when balancing. This has linked to our maths learning about doubles.

To finish our week we had a 'break the rules day' where the children loved breaking some of our school rules (including wearing our own uniform, nail varnish or tattoos). We look forward to using the money raised to buy some new phonics books for our school.
